It All Began with an Attitude of Gratitude

My journey along this new path to a better self can be traced to my son’s excitement and desire to have me read “The Secret”.

The darkness around me started to lift as I realized that I had so much in my life for which to be grateful. Keeping a journal of what had happened during each day and how grateful I was and at the same time expressing gratitude for the things that were in store the next day, the next week, the next month kept me focused on even the smallest things.

As I expanded in my discovery of more and more things that were positive in my life – more positive things kept happening. I then discovered other authors – Dr. Wayne Dyer and Jack Canfield were the books that I read and reread and absorbed more ideas on how to use the power of intention (the law of attraction), keeping my life in balance and being 100% responsible for everything in my life.
My thoughts and attitude had created my life. I always had claimed that someone else was writing my life story – and it was a shock to learn that I was the author of my life.
How could that be? I could not possibly be responsible for this thing or that!

The darkness faded more around me and I began to see and feel more amazing things – both in my own life and in the world around me.

When I read “The Power” by Rhonda Byrne, the light around me grew bright and colourful. Loving everything as well as the attitude of gratitude was the secret. As I gave more love and more gratitude more wonderful things started to happen. Our business opportunities grew, family relationships began to improve and my inner spirit began to blossom in the light that shone around me.

It seemed like every time I turned around new people, new insights arrived in my life – faster and faster – and my inner spirit blossomed. The light outside and around me was warmer, more colourful and coaxing the inner me to shine and come out of the darkness.

Love is EVERYTHING!

The Grand Canyon

Last night I watched and was inspired by a video, that was set to a sound track of classical music, of white water rafters on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.

As I viewed the program I reflected that the ride is not unlike our ride through life. There are peaceful, quiet times where we float along – and if we are in spirit and in balance we marvel, celebrate and give thanks for the beauty around us.

When the waters get tumultuous we hang on for dear life and put our trust in a power greater than ourselves. We think we are in control but there is a hand guiding our boat and protecting us from harm.

It is during these times that we often forget that that hand is there. And we often curse the water and forget to notice the breathtaking beauty around us and give thanks to the Creator who created it. Even those rocks, boulders and waves are important in our spiritual growth. As we steer our boat away from the rocks and come through the crashing waves we have mastered so many skills.

With all that is going on around us we need to stay calm in our boat or we will surely run amok. When we once again reach the serene stretches we need to remember and give thanks for the strength and skills we gained as we negotiated those rough waters. Those experiences taught us much about how to approach the next difficult stretch which we know is somewhere around the next bend in the river – they are inevitable as we go through life.

We need to remember that inner serenity is essential at all points along that journey.

How do we find that inner serenity?

That will be different for each of us. Prayer to our God and faith will certainly bring peace as Jesus calmed the waters on the Sea of Galilee.

And we must consider who is in the boat with us. Do we have we people who love us, whom we love and whom we can trust? We need wise guides with experience and skills to see us safely through the “river of life” and friends and family who sometimes need to lend a hand to help see us through to the peaceful waters. These are the people who celebrate your successes and your shining inner spirit and hold tight to you in times of trouble.

Who is in your boat with you?

As I contemplated the sheer rock face of the canyon I visualized the codes of conduct, societal mores, or teachings from the Bible, Koran or other holy books that keep us from straying too far off path that we are destined to travel. If we break any of these universally accepted rules of honesty, truth, love of thy neighbour and love of God we will certainly flounder and face serious consequences.

May your ride down the river of life inspire you with its beauty and give you skills and strength to face everything on the water. May you use your hearts and eyes to mark the beauty that God has given us to enrich our lives here on our earthly journey during the peaceful days and most especially during the turbulent times.

This children’s song that we taught and had the students sing when I was working as an elementary school teacher was one of my all time favourite songs.  Listening to the voices of the children sing these simple but powerful words I always felt so inspired and spiritually uplifted.

Now I understand that as they sang the words the vibration of LOVE was emanating out and encompassing all of us in the room.  Looking back from my perspective now and from what I have learned during recent years – Melvina Reynolds knew exactly how potent and crucial love is in our lives..  Not only do we need love but it is essential to give it away in order to get it back – ten, twenty, a hundredfold!    It took many years for me to truly actively and consciously begin to practice the message that the song was teaching us.

I know in the past I held back love, criticized, blamed and generally practiced conditional and inconsistent love to people –including family, friends, acquaintances and everything in general.

I don’t claim to have reached the level of pure love – only God and Jesus loved the world purely and without reservation.  I am aiming for the “51% tipping point”. I just know that the blessings and love that have flowed into my life as I “give away my pennies” have been truly magic.   

Remember to lend, spend, give away your love and when it comes rolling back, open your door, welcome and treasure it.

Who needs your love right now?

I am taking the leap into the blogging world. I have had many different occupations in my life. A nurse, an accounting manager for a large oilfield company in Alberta and even grain farmed, but now I am doing what I love most and that is writing. I also paint and love being creative. I have a wonderful supportive husband who cheers me on in all my endeavors. So, big wide world – I hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoy writing it. Thank you Gail Vilcu, as my coach and my friend for giving me an outlet to let my creative thoughts flow.

The Tamarack Tree

In the forest, the Tamarack tree is the most interesting. It is a deciduous tree posing as a pine tree, meaning as winter approaches it looses its soft pine needles and then its dark bark stands in stark contrast against the evergreens.

In summer it looks exactly like a pine when really it is an imposter. It is green and lush but winter “outs” the Tamarack.

We are so much like the Tamarack as we feel so much more comfortable in a crowd. We, in a crowd can hide our problems and our past.

What would happen if we, being so secure in a crowd, were like the Tamarack and as we lost our needles we stood out? The pine needles that protected us in that crowd all fell softly to the ground and we could be the imposter no more.

Let’s be like the Tamarack and as we shed our needles of negativity, dashed hopes and dreams and past painful experiences because like the Tamarack, we know we can have a rebirth. As we grow our new pine needles we are renewed and beautiful and we stand out in the crowd.

Be proud of who you are and come forward for all to see. Each and everyone of us have a gift to offer, so flourish and don’t hide in the forest.

Stand tall among the evergreens and shed the past, the present hurts, failures and pain but always remember you will have a rebirth and renewal as you learn and grow your new pine needles.

Kibbles and Bits

I was watching my dog Bailey eat his Kibbles and I had “a moment” as I watched him take one tiny kibble, taste it, then spit it on the floor. He repeated this process of tasting and spitting until he found the perfect one and then he ate it. Now, if I left those spat out kibbles and not put them back in the bowl, he sometimes saunters over and eats one previously rejected.

I thought, wow, if only I took in good thoughts and nice things said to me or past good experiences and had that wonderful ability to spit out the bad and only take in the good, how wonderful would my life be..

That is where the realization came to the forefront,

When I have a negative thought or am hurt by words said, for example, I need to stop, as Bailey does, and at that moment taste and then realize I don’t like it and swallow it knowing it means nothing to me and it will sit somewhere deep in the recesses of my mind..

Sometimes when a past hurt or thought comes into my thought process, it is like Bailey’s rejected Kibble. I swallowed the bitter Kibble and it was negative and hurtful. I didn’t want it even though I swallowed it again. It now goes back with the other negative beliefs and thoughts about myself that I no longer need or believe or want to taste again.

When Baily goes back to eat a rejected Kibble, I need to do that as well. The first taste can not always be trusted and once I have thought about that thought or feeling, well it wasn’t as big or bad after all, so it’s okay to take it in.

I know exactly where to put it all. If it is bitter and bad, negative and hurtful or sad – it belongs outside the bowl or in my case filed away as unwanted and garbage.

Thank you Bailey for teaching me to stop, taste and then decide how to react to a past thought or a spoken or even written word.

My Kibbles all go in, my choice is how to react before I swallow or maybe just spit it back to where in my mind it is filed neatly away and locked with a sign that reads “Kibbles-Rejected”

THE TINY BOX

I have spent the summer at the lake and this weekend we are attending a wedding and then off to the foothills of the Rockies for two weeks. I will be so glad that in a few weeks I can actually use my computer and not have to type in this teeny tiny little box on my phone.

It always, after I hit “post” makes me groan as it has spelling errors and the format is all screwed up. I am so looking forward to having my laptop back.

As I thought about this tiny box I had this realization that I used to live and operate my life out of this somewhat same little box. My ideas were tiny and my thoughts were small. I was going through life living in a box where I was so restricted that if I had a problem, well the tiny box had so many rules built in that there was nothing I could change. I viewed life and lived my life thinking this was how I was supposed to be. I felt so trapped in my box with the built in rules of my past. Only certain words would fit. Any ideas were small, thoughts would never get out as I ran out of space and oh wow I would get a “time out” warning just when I had the best thought.. Sometimes my wants and desires would just disappear because I didn’t save them. Poof! They were gone.

Once I hit “Post” in my life it was all over. Done. I could not edit, change or rewite. It was there for all to see with errors, missing words to ideas and a period which meant that was the end when I didn’t want it to be the end.

But now that I have now stepped out of that ” tiny box syndrome” I realise this is only temporary being in a confined box with rules that are so frustrating as I know I stepped out into this great wonderful world with endless possibilities and an expansive space to keep on growing and learning. No tiny box living for me anymore!

So many of us feel we have this “tiny box syndrome” but we don’t. We can just step out of that little box and live the life of our dreams

Live life BIG. No more little thoughts and little steps. No more punctuation marks that put a halt to moving on.

Come along with me and take that first step out and then spread your big beautiful expansive wings…… and fly to where there is endless space and time to be creative and most importantly HAPPY.

Doesn’t it feel great. When you are in that tiny box you only have one wing……Wow, now we can soar the beautiful blue skies with two huge and magnificent wings that can take us to anywhere we desire. Our wings can take us to places we have never been before.

My “Room With a View”

While looking through new eyes at each new visit, I realise His majesty and power, as this beauty and perfection that I view is not an accident. It was planned and executed perfectly and with detailed precision.

Life was made to work in unison with each other.

I feel so close to my creator. I feel so close to “me”.

It all works so perfectly together.

Amazing isn’t it?

The animals and vegetation all know their purpose, I also am aware of my purpose and reason as to who I am and how I fit into God’s puzzle of life. The puzzle whose pieces fit perfectly and exact…

Just as the squirels dry their mushrooms so carefully in the branches of the evergreens and the trees stretch ever so tall to capture the sun; I too am learning my life’s meaning and pupose and how great it is to be part of it all.

It takes my breath away.

I am here right now for a special and magical experience and I honour my God as I now am understanding that realisation and my new-found purpose in life.

As I stretch up my arms like a pine tree, I am also reaching for the light.

Oh, how warm and loving it feels on my face.

I give humble thanks, appreciation and praise that today is mine and He is sharing it all with me.

I may feel small in comparison to these huge pines and walls of rock that disappear into the clouds but He makes me feel big, confident and strong.

I have been writing from my phone that I call “Josie from the Little BOX”

It seems like yesterday that I was oblivious to terms like “Source” and my INNER CHILD.

I feel so wonderful and free and I am sure I experienced an emotional DE-TOX.

I was desperate as I was suffering and all my thoughts had GONE WILD.

There was a movie in my mind running negative thoughts over and over, I’m sure it was set permanently on REPLAY.

My movie made me believe I was not good enough and I needed to change – but who should I BE?

My heart was broken – there just had to be ANOTHER WAY.

A lovely lady appeared by chance and took my hand saying “don’t worry, I can help you. Trust me and you will SOON SEE”.

“You can be happy”, she said. “Take my hand – we are embarking on a new JOURNEY”.

I breathed in her wisdom and she dried my tears – that beautiful lady was my ANGEL GAIL.

With her guidance I am now not only good enough – I am more than I dreamed I COULD BE.

Now on my own, I can soar and stay the course and joyously away I CAN SAIL
