Benefits of Meditation

 Meditation and meditative techniques have several benefits at the gross body or material level:

Improvement of body luster and general health-When your mind focuses on a particular part of the body, the blood flow to that part increases and cells receive more oxygen and other nutrients in abundance.
Improvement in concentration – Many of the athletes and sports professionals regularly employ meditation methods. Studies have found a direct correlation between concentration exercises (meditation) and the performance level of sports professionals. Meditation strengthens the mind, it comes under control and is able to provide effective guidance to the physical body to effectively execute all its projects.

Health benefits of Meditation:

Meditation helps because we learn to control the relentless
flow of thoughts. During meditation, the aim is to keep the mind still; this brings clarity and inner peace.
This is the best type of relaxation because we become free from the relentless worries and anxieties
of our own making. Find time to meditate for 10 or 15 minutes each day;

Through meditation we can easily detach ourselves from the pressures of the world.

Though meditation is usually recognized as a largely spiritual practice, it also has many health benefits.
The yoga and meditation techniques are being implemented in management of life threatening diseases;
in transformation of molecular and genetic structure; in reversal of mental illnesses,
in accelerated learning programs, in perceptions and communications beyond the physical,
in solving problems and atomic and nuclear physics; in gaining better ecological understanding; in management of lifestyle and future world problems.

Some benefits of meditation are:

It lowers oxygen consumption.
It decreases respiratory rate.
It increases blood flow and slows the heart rate.
Increases exercise tolerance in heart patients.

Good for people with high blood pressure as it brings the B.P. to normal.

Meditation helps to reduce stress by allowing our mind to settle down  in such a way that allows us to switch off from the worries that can plague us through the day. Meditation allows us the opportunity to spend time by ourselves, without feeling at the beck and call of others. Spending 10 -30  minutes in quietening the mind and focusing on the present moment, makes us more relaxed and effective decision makers. Meditation allows us to relax our body and mind in such a way that we gain clarity around any decisions we are conflicted with.

With a growing awareness of the link between our state of mind and physical health, it is not uncommon to distinguish that physical ailments are symptoms of emotional turmoil. In clearing the emotional aspects of life, one is able to gain a possible healthier body. Meditation can give us peace of mind, and this can be a helpful step in avoiding many stress related ailments. Meditation has also been shown to relieve the pain associated with certain ailments and illnesses.

How often do you find yourself in a negative conversation with yourself or another? “The art of meditation teaches that, not only is it possible to control our thoughts, but, we can learn to stop them completely. Through meditation we can bring our unruly mind under control. This creates peace of mind and enables us to achieve what we want to.”*1

When we control our thoughts we no longer live in the mind and allow our emotions to be controlled by a force greater than ourself. When we are in our head, our very being can be distracted by all sorts of minor or major irritations, all which take us off course to our intended direction. “A powerful benefit of meditation is that we are able to detach ourselves from these insignificant, yet irritating thoughts. This detachment is not indifference, it is just that we are able to maintain equanimity in the midst of life’s inevitable turbulence.”*2

Happiness can occur from the simple act of  BEING. I talk about this aspect of life in great length in my conversations. Meditation takes us to the source of happiness, which is found in our own peace of mind. Meditation is an excellent practice to take us to that place of happiness dependent on our own inner attitude. Through meditation. we discover the true source of happiness and that is is always present within and not to be found from outer circumstances.

Through meditation, we are improving our power of concentration and visualization. When we concentrate on that which we desire, we are able to produce greater results in less time.

Meditation takes us out of our head. When we are in our head (thinking mind) , we are not in the moment of now. Living in the past or in the future takes us out of alignment to build or fulfill that which we are committed to. Like a blanket covering a body to stay warm, the thinking mind covers the spontaneity and creativity to perform. Meditation clears the mind and lifts the veil, uncovering our creative potential.

However, if you feel empty inside; if you aspire to know more about the nature of existence and life, then meditation can be of great help. Usually we look for meaning in life through external events and other people. Meditation, however, shows us that we can gain a greater understanding of life through knowing who we are. In meditation we gain a new perspective of life, uncoloured by our own egoistic perspective. For those who wish it, meditation can become a lifelong process of answering the eternal question: “Who am I?”

“The benefits of meditation are real, and it is a way of life. Like any other habit, it takes time to develop, do not expect all these benefits in the first few attempts; the mind takes time to tame. Also, it is difficult to explain all the benefits of meditation, because it involves a state of consciousness that cannot be expressed by words.

To appreciate the benefits of meditation it is essential to meditate yourself, and today is the perfect day to start your meditation practice.
